Astavarga is the group of eight medicinal plants viz. Kakoli, kshirkakoli, jeevak, rishbhak, meda, mahameda, riddhi, vriddhi. Particularly found in North-West Himalaya in Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh between elevations of 1500-4000 m. Mostly used in Himalaya region for traditional medical purpose and also in traditional medical system in India (TMS). Their natural habitats are specific in ecological environment and hence these occur only in small pockets, therefore substitute plants of astavarga are recommended.
WHO estimated that 80% of the population of developing countries relies on traditional medicines mostly plants for their primary health care needs .India holds the highest proportion of medicinal plants know for their medicinal value since ancient times i.e; Rigveda, (C.S, S.S)
Paryayratnamala was the first ancient text to use the word Astavarga. It is a group of eight medicinal plant in Ayurveda medicine namely viz. Kakoli, kshirkakoli, jeevak, rishbhak, meda, mahameda, riddhi, vriddhi. Particularly found in North-West Himalaya in Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh between elevations of 1500-4000 m asl. These plants are considered very good rasayana with rejuvenating and health promoting properties. According to bhav prakesh nighantu-It relieves vata-pitta disorder,rakta roga, trsna, premeha and jwara. Due to its high medicinal value astavarga are used in different forms eg: taila, churna, ghritam and its formulation in traditional medicinal system (TMS) including chyavanprash.
Bhav prakasa describe that even king would find it difficulty to access the astavarga plant.Therefore substitute of a astavarga are recommended.

- GUNA: Guru, Snigdha.
- VIRYA: Sheeta.
- VIPAKA: Madhura.
DOSAKARMA: Tridosha Shamaka.
INDICATION: To treat bone fracture, fever, diabetes, provide strength to the person.
PARTUSED: Root/rhizome/whole plants.
DOSE : 2-3g.
ANUPANA : milk and ghee.
